Everyone has hobbies that bring joy, contentment, and bring out their creative side.
Makeup has been around for centuries and has been a tool for self expression, creativity, and empowerment. More recently, makeup has been used for personal expression, connecting with others in their community, and social analysis. Cosmetics have greatly influenced and impacted individuals and communities, and are of great significance in today’s world.
Makeup to some is more than just a routine, but rather something that helps with self exploration and expression. Keisha Tarkington (12) is a student at James Campbell High School, and found comfort in using makeup at an early age. Tarkington said, “During COVID to pass time I would watch beauty influencers on YouTube. This started my love for makeup.” Just like Tarkington, makeup allows individuals the opportunity to explore other parts of their identity. All of these subtle enhancements made to themselves helps to tell a story.
For many people, makeup is a form of expression. Experimenting in different ways helps showcase a person’s personality and creativity. Tarkington said, “Makeup helps me to have a sense of character and confidence. Making these personal decisions over my appearance helps to share a piece of me to the world.” Makeup is a powerful tool that gives individuals the ability to express themselves in a society that often has strict beauty standards.
Although cosmetics are very often used for personal use, it also helps to connect individuals and build communities. Social media platforms, especially TikTok and Instagram, are good spaces for makeup enthusiasts to share their work and for those who want to learn.
Emberlyn Medeiros is a student at Ewa Makai Middle School, and is just starting to learn about makeup. Medeiros said, “Social media apps are what introduced me to makeup. I get to watch tutorials and see everyone’s different talents, and hope to one day be as good as them.” Social media content helps provide tips and tricks that people can learn to help improve their skills.
Having a place where people can bond and connect through a common passion gives a sense of belonging, and even brings diverse groups together. Medeiros further emphasizes the importance of being a part of a community. Medeiros said, “Cosmetics is a very unique way to connect with others and be surrounded by others with similar interests.” The beauty community often has social media challenges and workshops that let people share their work and gain feedback and more inspiration. These groups and gatherings create safe spaces for people to express themselves and feel like they belong.
Most makeup brands are very inclusive with shade ranges and cultural backgrounds of each person. These ranges have made it easier for everyone to find their perfect shade. The diversity in makeup also lets people show off their cultural backgrounds by celebrating their unique traditions through makeup. For example, tribal and henna techniques are often used by people. The inclusivity in makeup brands helps encourage people to be confident in their own skin and to embrace their own beauty. Seeing different ethnicities and skin tones in marketing campaigns gives a form of self expression.
Makeup goes far beyond cosmetics. It is a powerful way for all people to express themself, connect with others, and connect with themselves as well. Makeup is often viewed by people as a basic trend. But behind every look, there is a special meaning, whether it be a personal story or cultural style. As the beauty community continues to evolve, reflecting and recognizing those who shared their personal and diverse stories is essential to see the deeper part of the makeup community and those within it.
