From October to November over 80% of America’s pumpkins are sold (USDA Economic Research Service). Many are used for decoration or food for the holidays. Pumpkin pie is one of the foods that is most commonly associated with food made from pumpkin. This pie is considered delicious by many people and is a real treat for those who enjoy the flavor of pumpkin. For those who enjoy it, pumpkin pie may be a staple for the holidays, especially Halloween and Thanksgiving. The recipe shown below is a classic recipe that encompasses the flavor of pumpkin delightfully.
For the crust, you will need these ingredients. (If you desire a home-made crust, otherwise purchase one from your local store.)
- 1 ⅓ cups of all purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons of cold water
Next, for the pumpkin filling, you’ll need the following ingredients.
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves
- 15 oz pumpkin pureé (canned or fresh-made)
- 12 oz condensed milk
Step 1 (For crust)
Heat oven to 425°F. In a medium bowl, mix flour, ½ teaspoon of salt and the oil with a fork until all the flour is moistened, sprinkle the mixture with cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Toss with fork until all water is absorbed fully. Shape the pastry into a ball and press into the bottom and up the sides of a 9 inch oven safe pie pan. (Preferably glass)
Step 2 (For filling)
Next, in a large bowl, beat eggs slightly with a hand beater or whisk. Beat in ½ cup of sugar, the cinnamon, ½ teaspoon salt, ginger, cloves, then the pumpkin and condensed milk.
Step 3
To prevent spilling, place the pastry-lined pie plate on an oven rack before adding filling. Carefully, pour pumpkin filling into a pie plate and bake for 15 minutes.
Step 4
Next, reduce the temperature of the oven to 350°F. Bake for roughly 45 minutes or until a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean. (Cook for additional 5 minutes until knife comes out clean). Place pie on a cooling rack. Cool completely for roughly 2 hours.
Finally, when the pumpkin pie is cool, top with any topping of your choice and enjoy!
