Alyssa Rivera grew up celebrating Halloween every year with her cousins. She would go to Party City, get their costume picked out, and go out to trick or treat together. “I loved Halloween growing up. Seeing everyones decorations during the day and night time in our neighborhood was so cool. I come from a Dominican Family so they found any excuse to celebrate whenever they could. Halloween was the perfect excuse for a family party, getting together, eat food, all the kids hanging out, my grandpa would be grilling stuff up. It was a good time, I miss it,” said Rivera.
These childhood memories are the reason people continue to celebrate. If something so innocent as dressing up once a day makes everyone so happy, why stop? Whether it’s trick or treating, going to parties, or hanging out with friends, Halloween keeps its magic.
Bags of candy are replaced by party invites and instagram posts but the excitement is still the very same. The creativity of costumes, the thrill of everyone out at night, it’s all still there.
If anything, Halloween only gets better with age, The costumes become scarier, and funnier. Adults throw elaborate parties, decorate homes, and find new ways to celebrate the same night they fell in love with as kids.
Haylee Conlee said,”We try to mature quickly and express that through costumes and our own ways of celebrating.” Conlee said, “It’s a good balance between both the traditional dressing up to trick or treat and hanging out and partying.”
Halloween isn’t something people grow out of but something that grows with them. From candy to costumes to celebrations that light of the city, it reminds people that they are never too old to be creative, laugh with friends, and have fun.
